Role of an Advisor / Mentor – Some Thoughts

Share :

In my interactions over the last few months with Founders of startups and the startup ecosystem, here are my thoughts which are not necessarily in order of priority:

There needs to be a complete Alignment with Founders in terms of Aspiration, Purpose, and Values i.e Dilse connect (from the heart).

Mentor must act like a Dost (partner with empathy), be available to the founder/s during the time of celebrations and anxiety.

Mentor should be a Facilitator and not a decision maker, therefore founder should provide frameworks, share life learnings, power of values, purpose, the same page, be passionate about the biz, etc. and help founders evaluate tradeoffs in decision making.

Mentor must not have an ego, be good listeners and learners, be a mentee and mentor at the same time, have an open mind, must not be driven by their past successes and experiences.

Mentor need to be more right brain aligned than the left brain, this is where the life experience of mentors comes into play.

There needs to be an alignment of commercial incentives and Mentor must have skin in the game by putting their reputation at stake also invest if possible no cash payment for the role only equity.
